Portugal snatch late victory over Czech Republic in Nations League opener

Hranac own goal gifts Conceicao winner after Provod had put Czechs ahead

Late, late drama in Guimaraes as Czechs rue missed penalty

PRAGUE -- A late own goal from Tomas Hranac gifted Portugal a dramatic 1-1 victory over Czech Republic in their UEFA Nations League opener on Saturday.

Substitute Vitinha's cross from the right was headed back across goal by Nuno Mendes, and Vaclav Stanek could only palm the ball into the feet of Hranac, whose attempted clearance deflected into the net.

Portugal had been pushing for a winner after David Provod's superb 32nd-minute curler had put the visitors ahead, and they were finally rewarded deep into stoppage time.

The Czechs had earlier missed a penalty, with Tomas Soucek seeing his spot-kick saved by Diogo Costa in the 35th minute.

The result means Portugal move top of Group B2, level on points with Spain, who beat Switzerland 1-0 earlier on Saturday.
