2024 Indian General Election Results: Modi's BJP Wins Again, But Falls Short of Majority

India's General Elections: A Shift Towards Bipolar Politics

The results of India's 2024 general elections, held in April-June, were announced on June 4th and 5th. The elections saw a significant shift towards bipolar politics, with two major alliances emerging: the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the Congress-led United Progressive Alliance (UPA).

BJP Secures Third Consecutive Term, but Short of Majority

Despite winning the most seats for the third consecutive time, the BJP and its allies fell short of a majority in the 543-member Lok Sabha (lower house of parliament). The BJP won 282 seats, while the UPA won 152 seats. Other regional parties won the remaining seats.

This outcome signals a setback for Modi, who had sought a stronger mandate to implement his economic and social agenda. The BJP's loss of seats has been attributed to factors such as economic slowdown, agrarian distress, and dissatisfaction among voters with the government's performance.
